- You have an opportunity tell the FCC what you want by sending them comments
- on the vanity NPRM. If enough people request that 1X1 callsigns be made

- They should allow for ANY combination of legitimate US-amateur allocated
- calls. If I remember correctly, In the US, the call must BEGIN with "A,
- K, N, or W" then have a SINGLE DIGIT NUMBER and followed by at LEAST one
- letter.
-
- SO... W8A, would be OK.

- Oh, that's easy. We'll give 'em a no-code license and send 'em up to the
- VHF/UHF bands (oops - forgot this isn't .policy).
-
- While we're on the subject, until recently I had an older FT-101 xcvr -

- PA tubes in the final. The band switch included an 11 meter position.
- This 11m slot has always perplexed me, since the amateur service lost
- 11m back in the 50's; why would a 70's era rig still carry 11m?

- Ralph Leighton
- Friends of Tuva
- March 6, 1994
-
- Dear Ham Friends,
-
- I am sending this appeal to all hams in the Bay Area from San Jose to San
- Francisco. Please read this letter carefully and give it your utmost
- consideration.
-
- In the summer of 1992, as a group of visiting American tourists was about to
- board a small aircraft in Tuva, a faraway land nestled between Siberia and
- Mongolia-for a flight to Irkutsk, a woman approached them with a worried look
- on her face and a large envelope in her hands. The envelope contained X-Ray
- photographs of her daughter, Tanya, who suffers from an unsightly birth defect
- that has made her face too wide. Tanya's mother pressed the envelope into the
- tour leader's hand, and asked him to help.
-
- The leader contacted me, as he knew my organization is interested in Tuva.
- Our main activity has been to share the joy of discovering this remote land,
- especially its culture of nomads herding a wide variety of animals-from
- cattle, sheep and goats to yaks, camels, and reindeer - all in a relatively
- small area the size of Washington State. Most remarkable is the vocal
- technique by which a solitary Tuvan can sing two, sometimes three notes.
-
- Friends of Tuva is not experienced in charity work. But happily, with the
- help of Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, a connection was made with
- Interplast, Inc.of Palo Alto,a charity that makes the miracle of corrective
- plastic surgery available to children like Tanya free of charge. Amy Laden,
- Director of Medical Services, informed me that the doctors at the Stanford
- Medical Cenbter have offered to perform this heroic operation for Tanya on
- April 23.
-
- For the surgery to take place, a host family needs to be found who can open
- their hearts and home to Tanya and her mother for up to eight weeks beginning
- on April 12. It would be best if you live within an hour's drive of Palo
- Alto, as several doctor visits will be necessary. I know it's a lot to ask,
- but could you be a host family?
-
- If you, as the host family, cannot drive Tanya and her mother to Stanford
- University Medical Center and back, volunteer drivers can be solicited.
-
- Finally, if someone you know speaks Russian, their services are needed as
- well, especially for the doctor visits.
-
- If you could help as a host family, as a driver, or as an interpreter, please
- contact Amy Laden, Director of Medical Services at Interplast, at (415) 424-
- 0123 during business hours. If you can think of someone else who might be
- able to help, please contact them, and tell them about the situation. With
- your or your friends help, we can give little Tanya a new and Happier life.
-
- Sincerely,
-
- Ralph Leighton
- Founder and Director
-
- P.S.:
- Kongar-ool Ondar, one of Tuva's premier throat singers will accompany Tanya
- and her mother to California, and will perform at several fundraising events.
- (He will stay with me in Los Angeles.) As thanks for hosting Tanya and her
- mother, Ondar will be happy to sing for you and any guests you invite for a
- party. There is nothing like hearing (and seeing) throat singing up close,
- with no microphones, in an intimate setting.

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I am going to be installing a VHF/UHF vertical base station
- antenna on the roof of my fraternity house in the next week or two.
- Before I do, however, I am really interested in learning about what
- steps I can take to help protect the house against lightning. The
- antenna is about 7 feet tall and the tip of the antenna will be about
- 40' off the ground.
- Is there a book or other source of information that someone could
- recommend to me? While I'm not terribly worried about this (there are
- plenty of other structures nearby that are a lot taller than 40') I
- would like to take whatever reasonable precautions I can.
- Thanks.

-
- It's easy. You simply use galvanized thimbles and cable clamps. Use 4 clamps
- per end for Philly, and 3 per end for steel. This only applies to the new
- generation of phillystran. The old type requires the potted end fittings. In
- fact normal installation is to use steel ends as a vandalism deterrent.
-
- Once you clamp the phillystran, you put rubber end caps with silicone over
- the cut end to keep water from wicking into the phillystran.
